STRUCTURE
OR BASS HOT SPOTS
The word structure means different things to different
fisherman, but to Mr. Bass the term has but one connotation: HOME.
Anglers speak of structure fishing as some
advanced technique of probing the deep waters with worms, jigs, spoons, or any
other deep-working lure. In part, that’s true. In the broadest definition,
though, structure is any object or feature in the water that is different from
whatever surrounds it. This is at any depth from 8” to 20’.
To find bass at any depth, then remember that these fish
are object-oriented creatures. They lurk close to objects, seeking protection
from other predators, shade from the sun, slack water out of current, and an
ambush point for baitfish.
Most fisherman most often search for bass around visible
structure which can be seen above or just beneath the water: such as: Lily Pads,
logs, stick-ups around grass beds, weeds, boat docks and practically anything
else visible from above the surface.
Sometimes, bass are more numerous around sunken
structure out of the angler’s sight. Areas such as: flooded timber (if
available), rocks, humps, ridges, creek channels and such.
Whether you spot structure with your eyes or pinpoint it
with your electronics or ToPo map, the rule is the same: Find the cover, find
the bass.
Next month, I will cover in more detail how to use
these areas to your advantage and how to fish them with worms, crank baits,
Carolina rigs and other various methods.
In the meantime,
Good luck out there and please remember- Be Careful- Be Courteous and most of
all RELEASE YOUR CATCH FOR THE FUTURE OF FISHING.
