BOKOR WINS 14TH MERCURY S.L.A.M.  IN KEY WEST

Mark Cooper is Top Celeb in Season Opener of Mercury Redbone Trilogy Series

KEY WEST, Fla. ----With two slams of tarpon, permit and bonefish over two days, Jim Bokor, Tavernier, won his fifth title in the14th Annual Mercury Outboards Southernmost Light-Tackle Anglers Masters (S.L.A.M.) celebrity fishing tournament Sunday.

Bokor released a tarpon, bonefish and two permit on Saturday, then Sunday followed up with three more tarpon and a bonefish in the Redbone trilogy opener. Capt. Tim Hoover, Marathon, guided him.

Bokor beat out Dan Zicari, Vero Beach, Fla. on slams and points. Zicari, guided by Capt. Mark Krowka, Davie, Fla. had a slam of fish on Saturday and released five more tarpon and a bonefish on Sunday for a total of 1000 points. Zicari in turn won the runner-up title based on time over Dr. Mike Gallops, Naples who had the same point amount.

“The strategy Sunday was to complete a second slam for the bonus points,” said Bokor. “That extra tarpon late in the afternoon was the one fish that put me over the top.”

The Mercury S.L.A.M. was held out of the Conch Republic Seafood Co. It was the opening event in the fall trilogy of the celebrated Mercury Redbone tournaments, which are among international annual fundraisers for cystic fibrosis (CF) research.

NFL star Mark Cooper, (Denver Broncos and Tampa Bay Buccaneers) was the only celebrity releasing a slam of fish.  Cooper was guided by Capt. Dale Perez, Islamorada, Fla. and paired with Charlie Wollmershauser, Tulsa, Okla., also won as team grand champion anglers.

Like father like son and with a slam of fish Jim Bokor, Jr. of Williamsville, NY was also a winner. Paired with jai alai star Joey Cornblit of Plantation, they were awarded paintings as the runner-up team grand champion anglers. Capt. Tim Carlile, Key West was their guide.

Baseball great Wade Boggs (Red Sox, Yankees, Devil Rays), Tampa, was second after catching two tarpon on artificial lures and a permit on bait guided by Capt. Steve Lamp, Sugarloaf Key. Boggs also won top angler on artificial releases.

Sharon Sydnor of Ft. Lauderdale, Fla. was named grand champion lady angler.  Her husband Larry Sydnor won pro-celebrity grand champion. Both were guided by Capt. Tom Kokenge, Big Pine Key, Fla.

The awards banquet was held Sunday night at the Wyndham Casa Marina Resort.

Friday, Bokor Sr. also won a one-day, one-fly pattern Seamaster Superfly contest with a bone fish and two tarpon.  Cal Collier, Sr., Chicago, was second.

The point’s series continues at Key Largo with the 13th Mercury Baybone Celebrity Tournament, October 3-5, for bonefish and permit and then the 16th Mercury/Cheeca Redbone Celebrity Tournament in Islamorada, December 5-7, for redfish and bonefish.

The tournaments are among 24 international Mercury Redbone events, which have raised over $5 million for CF research efforts.

Bokor takes 1,000 series points into the Baybone followed by Zicari with 750, Dr. Mike Gallops, Naples with 500 for third place and Kal Blumberg of Ft. Lauderdale with 250 points after finishing fourth in the S.L.A.M.
