Fond du Lac, WI – Mercury
Racing consumer performance outboards continually give birth to new achievements
in power, innovation and sophistication. The 2002 OptiMax 200XS and Pro Max 300X
outboards, equipped with the state-of-the-art SmartCraftTM Controller
Area Network (CAN) electronic control system, continue the tradition of high
performance advanced marine propulsion systems from Mercury Racing.
The next wave in boating, SmartCraft Integrated Marine Technology from Mercury links power, controls and internal and external sensors to provide precise data on all boat functions at a glance. The system monitors a variety of vital engine functions including fuel flow, fuel range, fuel used, and RPM, along with water depth, trim angle, water pressure and battery voltage. Boat functions monitored include fuel tank levels and water and waste tank levels.
For
2002, OptiMax 200XS and Pro Max 300X models come standard with the SC1000 System
Monitor and hardware that use a single data cable to connect an assortment of
SmartCraft System gauges for both single and multi-engine applications. In
addition, the optional SmartCraft System Speedometer accepts data from National
Marine Electronics Association (NMEA) GPS connections for read-out of highly
accurate boat speeds. Both the
OptiMax 200XS and Pro Max 300X feature the SmartCraft Engine GuardianTM
system which monitors over 40 sensors for early indications of problems that
could lead to engine damage. And, if a problem does occur, the system takes
corrective action to reduce the risk of damage, and get the boater home safely.

OptiMax
- 200XS
The
OptiMax 200XS consumer performance outboard, earned its ‘XS’ advanced
performance designation after winning and smashing several records at the
2000 ’24 Hours of Rouen’ endurance powerboat race. This race-proven
winner demonstrates the extended operating range and durability of Mercury’s
2-cycle direct fuel injection, low-emissions technology.
Professional flats angler Steve Lamp has realized the high performance attributes of this lightweight performance outboard. The switch from a larger 3.0 Liter EFI outboard to the compact 2.5 Liter low emissions OptiMax 200XS allows Lamp to carry less fuel. Saving 100 lbs in fuel in addition to the lighter weight of the compact 2.5 Liter 200XS. Says Lamp, “As only a flats guide will know, polling a boat is hard work. My boat, being 400lbs lighter from all the modifications with the new engine, is a huge difference to say the least. Not only has the motor cut back on fuel consumption, it also draws less water – allowing me to get into prime fishing spots without losing a single performance characteristic.”
All 2002 OptiMax 200XS models are equipped with a digital SmartCraft Controller Area Network (CAN) electronic control system. The CAN electronic control computer processor optimizes fuel, spark timing and knock control for each cylinder independently, enhancing engine running quality and performance. The processor also operates an electronic multipoint lubrication system. The reliable system delivers precise amounts of oil where and when it’s needed. And, if that were not enough, the Engine Guardian System monitors over 40 indicators to forewarn of possible problems that could lead to engine damage. The CAN computer processor also drives SmartCraft System Monitor and accessory System Gauges. The SC1000 System Monitor and accessory System Tachometer calculate fuel flow and range. Additionally, both drive optional single-function analog style System Link gauges.

Pro
Max 300X
The world’s most powerful consumer outboard; the Pro Max 300X is the
power
of choice for both
professional anglers and recreational boaters seeking its high power-to-weight
ratio, reliability and durability.
Wylie Nagler, 2000 Southern Kingfish Associaton (SKA) angler of the year,
relies on the awesome power of the twin Pro Max 300X outboards powering his
31-foot Yellow Fin tournament hull to get him to the trophy fish on the highly
competitive SKA circuit. A veteran offshore powerboat racer, Nagler says the
first 30-40 minutes of each tournament is comparable to an all-out offshore
powerboat race. “Running ahead of the pack, with an 8-10 mph advantage, makes
a big difference. Getting 6-10 extra minutes of fish time can make all the
difference between winning and losing.” In a recent Ft. Myers Beach, FL
tournament, Nagler held a 40-minute lead over the nearest competitor on a course
that was 135 mile – one way. Nagler is so impressed with the power and
durability of the 300X that he would like to see it used for offshore powerboat
racing.

2.5
EFI Series
For nearly 30 years, Mercury Racing has been perfecting the very best in race-derived performance outboard engineering. That continuous process of evolution is no
better reflected than in the 2.5 EFI series. A remarkable example of how powerboat racing technology can be adapted for consumers, these 280 h.p. dynamos are proof positive that Mercury Racing engineers can wring more horsepower per pound and cubic inch from an outboard than anyone else.
Speed starved sport boaters appreciate the aggressive race-inspired cylinder porting that enables 2.5 EFIs to run at 7500 rpm while durable NiComÒ-plated aluminum
cylinder bore liners enhance heat transfer – keeping the engines cool throughout the operating range. The 2.5 EFI features a digital electronic ignition system and a powerful 60-amp belt-driven alternator. The 44-amp charging capacity makes running a variety of electronic accessories worry-free. A lightweight flywheel extends crankshaft snout and upper crank bearing life, especially when used in rough water conditions. 2.5 EFI Series pistons feature rings that are placed lower for cooler, more dependable running at high rpm levels. High performance cylinder ports allow more fuel in to keep pistons cooler as well, enhancing engine durability and reliability.
-more-
2.5 EFI production begins in the machine shop where machinists drill oiling holes in the lightweight, top guided connecting rods and hand-grind cylinder block exhaust ports and chest to exact tolerances. Each engine is hand built from the bare cylinder block to the Sport Master gearcase. Center sections are painted ‘phantom-black’ on a state-of-the art paint line. The polyurethane enamel, used on all Mercury Racing products, protects the outboards with a tough, durable finish. Every engine is run on a dynamometer before it leaves the factory. Vital signs recorded include horsepower throughout the RPM range, fuel consumption and peak power.
· Four-bolt center main cylinder block/crankcase enhances torque retention, improving the stability of the crankshaft and reduces bearing wear.
·
O-ring sealed cylinder heads replace the
traditional head-gasket heads, providing greater head stability, less cylinder
distortion and improved engine cooling.
· Durable NiCom-plated aluminum cylinder bore liners provide better heat transfer throughout the cylinder block.
·
Carbon fiber, single-stage reeds have two to
three times the life of dual-stage fiberglass reeds and produce comparable
power.
·
Seven-petal intake system, fed by six
individual fuel injectors, ensures
quick starting and optimal engine performance throughout the 7500 rpm
operating range.
·
Solid engine mounts improve engine response
and overall boat performance at higher speeds.
· Digital electronic ignition system

Sport
Master Gearcase
A
heavy-duty propshaft enhances the durability of
2.5 Liter and 3.0 Liter Sport Master gearcases. The Sport Master,
featuring a satin-finished aluminum housing,
provides superior hydrodynamics enhanced by a
race-proven torpedo shape featuring less frontal area which reduces drag and
provides increased water flow. A three-slot, low-water pickup design reduces the
ingestion of weeds and other debris. Right-hand rotation Sport Masters have a
built-in torque tab on the skeg to reduce steering torque, improving control and
overall boat performance.
Counter-rotation Sport Masters, featuring a straight
skeg, are available on selected 2002
OptiMax 200XS, 2.5
EFI Series and Pro Max 300X 20" (508 mm) offshore center section models for
dual or triple engine applications.
The
Sport Master gearcase is designed to operate at transom heights of 27” to
30” (685 mm to 762 mm). 2.5 EFI
