Piscifun Torrent Baitcaster Reel Review

The Piscifun Torrent is a very solid deep budget baitcast reel that offers a robust drag system, shielded bearings, and adjustable magnetic brake system. While this reel might not have all of the features of more expensive casting reels, it’s an excellent value for the price and gives you what you need to get out there and start fishing.

Piscifun Torrent Overview:

Let’s just start this off by saying that the Piscifun Torrent is an inexpensive budget baitcaster. It’s not an expensive high-end reel. But for the sub $50 price range, the Torrent has performed admirably, even over the course of multiple years.

It’s available as a 7.1:1 and 5.3:1 gear ratio model with both left and right handed retrieve models. The Torrent comes with an 18 lbs max carbon fiber drag system that is plenty strong enough to handle the largest of freshwater bass species. The 5 shielded bearings keep it running smoothly, and the double line winding shafts add to the overall line performance. The magnetic brake system is adjustable from 0-10 and allows easy on-the-fly adjustments.

The screw oil hole in the side-plate allows easy application of lubricant instead of having to take apart the entire reel which is a feature we wish was on all baitcasting reels.

Despite lacking some of the polish and features of higher priced reels, the Torrent is a surprisingly solid baitcaster that gives you everything you need to catch bass.

Victor's Thoughts On The Reel

This reel is a perfect option for those with a tight budget who are looking to purchase their first or second baitcaster. Don’t be fooled by the low price of this product because it delivers some of the same features as more expensive reels.

I’ve been using the 7.1:1 gear ratio on a 7 ft medium-heavy rod, and it’s been fantastic. The Torrent is a great choice for those who want a capable reel without upsetting their wife.

Features

While missing some features that we typically prefer on a casting reel, there’s no denying that the Piscifun Torrent has the essentials covered.

Let’s take a deeper look at the key features of the Torrent.

Strong Drag System

The Piscifun Torrent is built with a robust drag system. Constructed with 3 layers of carbon fiber washers, separated by 3 additional aluminum drag washers, the drag system is one of the best features of the Torrent.

The Torrent has a max drag of 18 lbs, which is more than enough to give you the power you need to pull in your next big fish from the water bottom.

Good Reel Design

One amazing thing about the Piscifun Torrent is that, despite its low price point, this reel is expertly designed.

The graphite body helps to reduce the overall weight of the reel while also maintaining a high level of strength and durability.

The Torrent weighs in at 8 ounces, which is slightly heavier than most of the other casting reels we’ve reviewed, but only marginally so.

After a long day on the water, you’ll hardly notice a weight difference between the Torrent and a competitor.

Shielded Bearings

While Piscifun didn’t opt for ball bearings, likely to save money, they did engineer the Torrent with 5 shielded bearings on the reel body. The shielded bearings are designed to prevent a variety of elements from settling into the bearings and wreaking havoc on the reel’s performance.

Magnetic Braking System

The Piscifun Torrent baitcasting reel is equipped with a magnetic braking system. The braking system helps you to quickly adjust the amount of braking power you have on the reel, and is designed to help reduce backlash while casting.

The Torrent’s braking system is easily adjustable and lets you dial in the amount of power you have on the spool at any time. The ability to adjust the amount of brake power at any time is a great feature, especially if you regularly use different types of lures and presentations on the same rig.

It’s important to note that the Torrent is missing a traditional centrifugal braking system. This isn’t a dealbreaker, but using a magnetic only system does typically take more time to get used to and more practice in order to avoid birdnests.

CNC Machined Brass Gears

One of the hallmarks of the Piscifun brand is the high quality of their gears. The Torrent is no exception. The CNC machined brass gears are not only durable, but are also cut to incredibly precise dimensions.

Standard equipment on most high-end baitcasting reels, these quality gears are engineered to deliver the most reliable performance you can expect from a fishing reel. Piscifun may be a relatively young company, but their CNC machined gears are among the best in the industry.

Easy Access Oil Lubrication Hole

Another feature that we really appreciated from the Torrent is the ease in which the reel can be properly oiled.

The Piscifun Torrent is designed with an oil port located on the side of the spool. This allows for simple access to the reel’s oil port and gives anglers the ability to add oil much more quickly than the traditional method of having to dismantle the reel, something that most anglers can’t do without having to consult a manual.

Christopher's Impression

I was a little apprehensive before getting the Torrent, as I typically like the feel of reels with actual ball bearings. The roller bearings used in the Torrent haven’t had as big of an impact as I feared, but it’s not the smoothest reel and I think that’s the reason why.

I feel like it’s a fairly durable reel. The drag system definitely works well, and I have yet to have any issues with it. I like the handle as it provides plenty of control and has a pretty good grip.

On the downside, I haven’t had good success working with finesse baits with the Torrent. It seems to do much better when there’s a bit of weight on the fishing line, but just doesn’t cast very well at all when fishing finesse.

Overall, my feelings are fairly neutral. It’s not a bad real and I think it just comes down to personal preference, but I’d recommend spending a little bit more if you can to get a better baitcaster.

Pros and Cons

Pros:

  • Long lasting, durable baitcasting reel
  • Strong drag system with high max drag rating
  • Easy access lubrication through oil hole
  • Inexpensive pricing

Cons:

  • Doesn’t use ball bearings
  • Drum can tighten up on occasion
  • No centrifugal braking system

Sean's Piscifun Torrent Review

After about a year of testing the Piscifun Torrent and putting it through many different fishing situations, I think it’s time for me to share my thoughts.

In the world of baitcasting reels, there is a wide swath of quality and standards. When I pick up a $400 reel, my expectations of it are much higher than when I pick up a $40 one. So while I’m not holding the Torrent up to the same standards as my Shimano Metanium, I still put it through the ringer and can say that the Piscifun Torrent was surprisingly good.

It is not a high end reel by any means, but on one hand, I kind of liked that. It was nice to have a reel that was the equivalent of the beater truck I drive. So far it’s done just fine.

It doesn’t have the premium feel of my other reels, but when I’ve needed to get down and dirty and haven’t wanted to worry about my reel, the Torrent has fit that spot nicely.

FAQs

Founded in 2013, Piscifun is a new manufacturer on the scene, but is establishing itself as a reliable brand that offers quality products at highly affordable prices.

Piscifun reels are made in China.

We don’t really have a perfect recommendation, as your casting rod and reel combo is going to be highly dependent on the type of bass fishing you’re going to be doing. For more information on finding the best rod, click here to see our list of the top casting rods.

The reel is not specifically rated for saltwater use, but it is corrosion resistant and can handle some saltwater fishing. It’s helpful that the bearings are sealed which will help reduce corrosion.

After fishing in any type of saltwater, it’s especially important to rinse your reel off with freshwater thoroughly and would be advisable to take advantage of the easy access lubrication port and apply oil.

Available in 7.1:1 and 5.3:1, the gear ratio you choose will depend largely on the type of fishing you’re wanting to do with the Torrent as well as the type of lures you’ll be using.

Generally, you’re going to want a slower gear ratio 5.3:1 for deep diving crankbaits and any other presentation that’s going to require a good deal of torque from the reel.

For most other lures, you’ll probably want to go with the 7.1:1 as this will provide you with the retrieve speed you need for top waters, spinnerbaits, jigs, and other presentations that require a faster retrieve.

The handle on the Torrent is unable to be switched after purchase. Make sure that you select the correct handle side when purchasing the reel.

Piscifun includes a 1 year limited warranty with the Torrent. If it has any issues due to any manufacturing problems, they will replace the reel.
